The book is interesting because:
- It gives a detailed but succinct view of Chinese (and other Eurasian societies) ancient social and economic history.
- It describes how commerce, in some occasions, was used as a mechanism to create a peaceful relationship between Chinese agricultural societies and nomad groups of the north before and during the Han Dynasty.
- It shows how religion, and particularly Buddhism, expanded from India to China trhough the trade routes of Chinese silk and other goods.
- Describes very briefly the raise and fall of the Mongol Empire.
