A previous post discussed the future of the university. It considered the possibility of universities offering online degrees for free. Well, it seems that that is happening already. Check out the University of the People (created in 2009). The university has 1500 students. It has students from all over the world, including Haiti. It does not have accreditation yet, but has built a name and reputation. The sponsors are well known and the leadership signals confidence. This is the first school of its kind I know.
In higher, online, education there are a lot of non-monetary "rents" to earn. As a result, we will see many more social entrepreneurs entering this industry.
