Map of Guatemala. Two regions as regards to homicide rates, 2009.
This map of Guatemala tells that in the pink region the average homicide rate is more than three times the average in the green region. We have several hypothesis for this, such as the relatively high drug trafficking that is going on in the pink region (a trade corridor). In the green region the concentration of indigenous groups is higher. In addition, the green region is relatively poorer than the pink region, which suggest a weak connection between homicides rates and economic status. I also run a cluster analysis and no other variable divides the country in two clusters as the homicide rate does.
